As the pandemic continues through another school year, circumstances remain uncertain for students, families and teachers. Our social emotional curriculum (Second Step) provides resilience activities for grades 4k-8th to help support student well-being through class discussions on topics ranging from appreciating others to coping with stress. All grades are off to a great start and are fully engaged- even the students who have participated virtually.

With all the stress swirling and extra time at home, I wanted to share some tools through "Calm" that will help take care of your mental health and keep you and yours grounded.
Calm has created a free resource page with meditations, stories, music, talks and more, all hand-picked to support your mental and emotional wellness. Please send me an email if you have questions or need assistance with this site. [email protected] Children need social emotional skills to thrive both in the classroom and in life. Through Second Step Curriculum, students at Washington Caldwell will gain confidence, set goals, make better decisions, collaborate with others in work and play, and be able to navigate the world more effectively.
I am going on maternity leave starting next week. Mrs. Courtney Talley will be covering my Guidance Classes 4k-8th on either Wednesday or Friday. If you need to reach her at any point, please contact Jill Saltzmann or Kelli Vogt.

Keep the holidays simple and everyone happy with these suggestions from Home & School Connection:
This Thursday the K-Kids will be hosting a holiday celebration for staff, as well as having their Installation Ceremony! This is an event that students look forward to each year as they not only get to enjoy holiday snacks, but will have conversations with teachers and staff that they do not regularly see.
Next Week Tuesday, is another event that K-Kids love participating in....Caroling at the Elder Cottages! It is so great to see all of the smiles and holiday cheer! This past month in Guidance classes across the grades, we have been discussing empathy or the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Empathy helps create successful, happy kids, who are kind, moral, courageous and resilient.
Caring about other's is not just about playing nice; it is skill that is vital for children's well-being, mental health and leadership skills. This holiday season, students have been doing a great job showing they care and expressing empathy through out their school day, during after school clubs and through volunteer work. Asking "How was school today?" might not get you far. Instead, ask questions like these for a better idea of how your students day went:
